A warm front with moisture laden air lifted into the area during the day, and an approaching shortwave trough supported developing thunderstorm activity. With the atmospheric moisture content at a daily maximum based on upper air sounding records, torrential rainfall with rainfall rates of 3 inches an hour or greater were anticipated.
