The Flooding Character of Gibson County

River overflow along the White River is the dominant flood character in Gibson County. Recent events include minor flooding on the White River in February and May of 2025, following moderate to heavy rainfall. Additionally, a severe weather event in July 2025 produced torrential rainfall rates across Southwest Indiana, leading to flash flooding.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) data indicates that properties in Zone A and Zone UNKNOWN have experienced claims. While Zone A claims averaged a higher payout, Zone UNKNOWN claims reported significantly deeper water. Properties in Zone X_UNSHADED and Zone X have also had claims, though with lower average payouts and water depths.

Homeowners and real estate agents with properties located near the White River, or in areas identified as Zone A or Zone UNKNOWN, should pay particular attention to flood risk.
