Elk County Flood History

Flash Flood — May 21, 2014

A nocturnal convective complex brought training thunderstorms to north-central Pennsylvania during the early morning hours. A localized 3-5 inches of rain fell over a 8-10 hour period which resulted in significant flash flooding in Elk and northern Clearfield Counties. Flash flooding, to a lesser extent, also occurred in adjacent Warren and Cameron Counties.

Heavy rainfall between 1 and 4 inches produced widespread areal flooding across all of central Pennsylvania. Cold season hydrologic conditions, including snow and ice melt contributed to enhanced run-off especially across the higher elevations and northern mountains. Many small streams and creeks came out of their banks, resulting in numerous secondary road closures.

Widespread heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches produced extensive flooding across Central Pennsylvania for the first three days of December 2010. The heavy rain fell in two distinct periods with the first round of 1-2 inches falling by the evening of November 30th. Flash Flood — Jul 12, 2004

Heavy rain caused flooding in Elk County, especially in the Johnsonburg and St. Mary's area. Numerous roads were flooded and closed, and many reports of flooded basements were received.
