An inverted trough at 700 mb moved across southern Arizona and with sufficient instability and moisture in place with MLCAPE of around 1000 J/KG and PWAT values of between 1.3 and 1.6 inches, widespread thunderstorm activity was observed across most of south-central and southwest Arizona. Storms first developed across the higher terrain north and east of Phoenix as well as across portions of southern Maricopa County during the early afternoon hours.
