An upper level disturbance passing along a stationary front draped across the lower Mid-Atlantic region triggered spotty thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening of July 31st. Of particular note was the deep tropical moisture situated across the region, with precipitable water values across the Piedmont estimated to be around 2.2 inches per Storm Prediction Center Meso-Analysis, or about 2 standard deviations above normal for late July.
