Iowa came off of a very wet May, only to be followed by a near record wet June. Some of the flooding along Iowa's rivers continued from May into June. Heavy rains fell on a nearly daily basis somewhere in Iowa through the first half of the month. The first series of heavy rain events caused flooding over a large part of Iowa. An occluded/occluding surface low pressure system slowly worked its way into western and southwest Iowa during the morning and afternoon of the 25th. Given its location, Iowa was situated north of the warm front, which was much further south into central Missouri.

A strong warm front was in place across central Nebraska through northern Missouri. The front aloft bisected Iowa from northwest to southeast. A 35 kt low level jet was in place with strong moisture transport into the state.
