Moisture and instability from Hurricane Kay generated strong thunderstorms and heavy rain across sections of Southern California. Across the deserts, mountains and foothills, rainfall totals between 1 and 2.30 inches were observed. Strong thunderstorms generated several flash flooding events across the area. The most significant flash flooding event was near Lake Hughes in Los Angeles county where 53 people had to be extracted from their vehicles which were stuck in mud and debris.
