Strong heating during the afternoon created an unstable airmass with surface-based CAPE values in excess of 3,000 J/Kg across Tazewell County and the surrounding area, while precipitable water values varied between 1.6 and 1.8 inches. One thunderstorm developed to the near Richlands at around 6:15 pm EDT and lingered for about 75 minutes before weakening. This storm produced prolonged rainfall rates of 3 to 4 inches per hour.
