High instability (MUCAPE 2,000 J/kg) and abundant moisture (PWATs 1.8-2.0) created an environment conducive to strong to severe thunderstorm development along terrain features in southeast California during the afternoon of the 16th. DCAPE values around 1,200 J/kg supported strong to severe downburst winds. Thunderstorms initiated over Joshua Tree National Park during the early afternoon hours and produced flash flooding in the south end of the park. Four semi-trucks were also blown over on I-10
