A weak surface trough was present across portions of the Piedmont of central North Carolina in an otherwise high pressure regime. Isolated to scattered showers and storms developed in the late afternoon to early evening over the western Piedmont, tracking east and south over the central Piedmont and Sandhills during the late evening and overnight hours. A few of the storms became severe in Chatham and Orange Counties, along with flash flooding over Durham.
