Flood Cause
Heavy Rain

Well above normal rainfall upstream on the White, Wabash, and Ohio Rivers late March through mid-April led to minor flooding occurring mid-month along the Wabash River and just downstream of the Wabash/Ohio confluence in Southeast Illinois. River crests occurred between the 19th and 21st, with a swift decline in river levels bringing an end of flooding shortly after. Flooding of low-lying areas occurred, with limited impacts to rural roads, agriculture, and oil wells.

Flooding along parts of the Mississippi River surpassed the Great Flood of 1993. Along most other rivers, the flooding was relatively minor. The Governor of Illinois declared some counties disaster areas, including the Mississippi River counties of Alexander and Jackson.

The Wabash River remained above flood stage from late March through much of April. Even though rainfall was pretty close to normal in April, the flooding continued from late March because the heavy rainfall in March primed the ground for more flooding.
