Intense thunderstorm clusters tracked north into the Piney Woods of Deep East Texas near an instability gradient along and northeast of a warm front that was slowly shifting northward from the coast. With precipitable water values approaching 2 inches, training thunderstorms resulted in daily rainfall amounts exceeding 4 inches in some locations with the city of Lufkin being the primary location for urban flooding during the early evening hours on May 12th.
