An upper trough axis remained just to the west of the forecast area with a stalled frontal boundary across the Midlands which became a focus for convection on the afternoon of 8/4. Strong instability developed by the afternoon with surface based CAPE values around 3000 J/kg, although wind shear remained weak, less than 25 knots.
