A moist and unstable atmosphere led to the formation of several areas of showers and thunderstorms during the overnight and early morning hours of August 12th. The resulting rainfall and runoff from these showers and storms led to flooding problems for portions of eastern Kentucky, particularly in Leslie county, where numerous reports of flooding were received.
