Wet antecedent conditions and more heavy rain over a three day period led to major flooding on the Mohawk River at Utica. The Mohawk River at Utica crested at 407 feet above mean sea level which is 4 feet above flood stage. Heavy rain fell on the 17th of October as low pressure moved north from the Ohio Valley to the Great Lakes and an occluded front moved across upstate New York. On the 19th and 20th, another round of heavy rain fell as a cold front become quasi-stationary across the northeast

Low pressure moved north along the Atlantic Seaboard spreading steady and heavy rain into central New York during the overnight hours. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches were observed along with a considerable amount of melting snow into area rivers and streams.
