Flash Flood — Amherst, VA

Abundant rain advanced north into the region in advance of an area of low pressure to the west while a frontal boundary remained draped over the region. An average of 2 to 5 inches of rain fell from this system onto an already saturated ground from recent snow melt and rainfall. The heavy rain contributed to widespread flash flooding, mudslides, areal flooding, and river flooding.

A strong cold front extending from a complex surface low pressure system, brought intense thunderstorms which produced damaging winds and very heavy rain on April 12-13. The heavy rains resulted from a deep plume of tropical moisture lifted northward ahead of the cold front.

Flash Flood

The remnants of Hurricane Debbie moved north toward the area on August 8th, 2024. A strong southeast flow of wind on the system's northern extent, along with wet soils due to heavy rainfall, helped to cause downed trees and power lines over portions of Virginia.
