A complex low pressure system situated over the Ohio Valley combined with another low forming off the southeast coast to bring abundant moisture into the area. A band of thunderstorms developed during the evening of March 12th and tracked northeast into Southwest VA. A southeast flow helped enhance the rainfall over the region and |an existing snow pack in far western Giles County also helped contribute to the water runoff.
