Low pressure formed along the southeast U.S. coast on the morning of March 16. Strong cold high pressure was anchored over southern Canada resulting in cold temperatures over the northeast. As low pressure moved north up the coast, precipitation began as snow over Maine. By the morning of the 17th, a strong low pressure center was approaching southern New England.
