A cold front entered the state from the northwest. The atmosphere became very unstable with CAPE rising to near 5000 J/kg and lifted indices falling to around -10 C. There was strong moisture inflow ahead of a pre-frontal trough and upper level shortwave moving across the state. Thunderstorms fired over southwest Iowa by mid morning and tracked east-northeast.
