An upper trough across the Ohio and Tennessee Valley was dropping south into the southeast U.S. and rapidly trending toward a deep, cold core upper low. The first wave of inclement weather associated with this system occurred as an area of widespread moderate to heavy rain, with a line of strong thunderstorms along the leading edge.
