The initial storms formed in a hot and very unstable air mass, producing an isolated microburst near Owensboro. Later in the evening, a large cluster of thunderstorms drifted southeast from southern Illinois and then accelerated southeast across western Kentucky. Strong outflow winds ahead of the storms produced isolated damage. After the initial storms stabilized the atmosphere, the trailing storms posed more of a heavy rain and flooding threat.
