Another night in the long duration heat wave brought another round of nocturnal convection. Early in the morning of the 19th, a weak surface boundary set up across northern South Dakota into west central Minnesota. As the low level jet and warm advection increased after midnight, thunderstorms began to fire. The air mass was extremely unstable with precipitable water values over two inches. The winter snow melted first on the Minnesota side of the southern Red River Valley. Visible satellite imagery confirmed this fact, showing a distinct snow free north to south band that extended roughly 20 or so miles east of the Red River from Grant to Wilkin to Clay counties.

By mid afternoon of July 8th, temperatures across eastern North Dakota and the northwest quarter of Minnesota had risen into the mid to upper 80s with dew points in the mid 60s to low 70s. A stationary boundary set up from west of Bismarck to near Rolla, North Dakota.
