The center of Irene made landfall along the Virginia coast but strong winds extended well west into the Piedmont generating gusts to at least 40 mph and bringing down some trees and large tree branches. Lynchburg ASOS (KLYH) had a peak wind gust of 39 mph around noon and Danville ASOS (KDAN) measured a peak gust of 44 mph also around 12 pm.
