Snow melt in the central and northern United States and heavy springtime rainfall in the Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valleys contributed to significant flooding along the lower Mississippi River. The magnitude of flooding was comparable to the floods of 1927, 1983, and 1993. Moderate to major flood levels were reached during May along the Mississippi River from Red River Landing to Donaldsonville, with moderate to minor flood stages reached from Donaldsonville south to the metro New Orleans area
