Snow melt in the central and northern United States and heavy springtime rainfall in the Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valleys contributed to significant flooding along the lower Mississippi River. The magnitude of flooding was comparable to the floods of 1927, 1983, and 1993. Major flooding levels were reached at the close-by upstream Natchez gage.
