An upper trough and associated cold front was moving from the Ohio Valley toward the Mid-Atlantic region as the strong summer subtropical ridge was squashed southward across the southeast states. Showers and thunderstorms developed during the late afternoon across northwest North Carolina in advance of a near solid line of thunderstorms that tracked across the area during the evening in advance of the cold front.
