An anomalous upper air pattern developed July 3rd as a deep trough over the Lower Ohio Valley became cutoff and essentially retrograded westward over the lower Missouri Valley. As this trough moved westward, southerly flow between it and strong high pressure off the mid-Atlantic seaboard brought tropical moisture northward across the Tennessee and Lower Ohio Valleys.
