During the days prior to June 6th, the area received two to four inches of rain. On the 6th and 7th, additional rain fall in advance of an approaching cold front and coincident to the cold frontal passage. This additional rain helped areas to receive around six inches of rain by the start of June 7 and prompted flooding and flash flooding.

Upper level low pressure was centered over Hudson Bay to start the day on the 13th, with generally zonal west to east flow from the central Plains through the Mid-Atlantic. A slow-moving cold front was draped across the Ohio River Valley.
