6 to 7 inches of rain over a two-day period resulted in the Cedar River reaching unprecedented levels. At Austin, the river crested at a record 23.4 feet on July 11, nearly 8.5 feet above flood stage. This broke the previous flood of record, which was 21.9 feet set in July 1978. Interstate 90 and several other roads had to be closed due to high water. Numerous homes and businesses were damaged by flood waters.
