A moisture rich atmosphere set up across New Mexico behind the passage of a potent cold front the day before. Strong thunderstorms developed by late afternoon over the northern high terrain. Light northeast steering flow forced these storms southwest into the Upper Rio Grande Valley and the Lower Chama River Valley by late in the evening.
