Flash Flood — Arenac, MI

May 9, 2004

A warm front was moving slowly north into Lower Michigan. Thunderstorms developed repeatedly north of the warm front, dropping up to 2 inches of rain in less than an hour in spots. Isolated flooding and flash flooding resulted, with more widespread flooding in southern Gladwin County.

A very slow moving low pressure system advanced east from the central Plains. Unusually deep moisture was pushed northward into the Great Lakes region, ahead of this low. Multiple rounds of heavy rain fell in parts of northern lower Michigan on the 17th and 18th.

The Rifle River rose out of its banks and flooded between Omer and Saginaw Bay. Rain and warm temperatures contributed to a rapid melt of the snowpack in the basin. It is believed that an ice jam near the mouth of the river contributed to the high water levels.
