Low pressure developed over the Gulf States on Friday, April 1, and intensified as it moved slowly northeastward through the Mid-Atlantic States on the 2nd and 3rd, reaching northern New England by the morning of the 4th. A prolonged east-southeasterly gale developed in the Gulf of Maine, causing a high storm tide with large ocean waves, especially on the morning of the 3rd.
