Torrential rains from thunderstorms dumped between 6 and 8 inches of rain in a 24 hour period. Most of the rain fell between 8 pm on the 11th and 2 am on the 12th. Several residents in Pine Lake Mobile Home Park were forced to evacuate when water from the creek that drains the lake rose to knee deep. At least 20 roads and a few bridges were washed out. On the morning of August 30th Tropical Storm Irma developed rapidly over the eastern Atlantic Ocean, just west of the Cape Verde Islands. Tropical Irma quickly strengthened as it moved west, reaching hurricane strength by the morning of August 31st.
