October of 1998 was a fairly wet month across Iowa, in sharp contrast to September. According to the data provided by the State Climatologist, Harry Hillaker, October of 1998 was the 4th wettest on record with a statewide average rainfall of 4.82 inches. It was also the wettest since 1984. The second round of moderate to heavy rainfall occurred toward the middle of the month with rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches reported across parts of southern and southeast Iowa on the 17th.
