Another strong low pressure system moved across Kansas and Missouri on the 21st and 22nd. This system brought moderate to heavy rainfall to the Des Moines HSA. In the overnight hours of 21 April, heavy rains fell in the extreme upper end of the North Raccoon River basin. Radar estimates were inflated by a factor of two on the rainfall amounts, with actual rainfall close to 2 inches. A slowly northward moving boundary/warm front was draped across the area throughout the day. By the evening vigorous storms fired up just north of the boundary and continued as the low level jet began to pick up. Numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds were reported.

A moderately unstable airmass was in place across Iowa ahead of an approaching cold front. The airmass was tropical in nature with a clear tropical connection evident on satellite pictures. Precipitable water values were in the 2 to 2.5 inch range by mid afternoon.

A very moist airmass was in place with warm cloud depths near 4.5 km. Precipitable water values were in the 2.2 to 2.4 inch range over a large part of Iowa. A thunderstorm complex formed over eastern Nebraska during the evening of the 22nd.
