Hurricane Irene was an intensifying Category 1 hurricane at the time of closest approach to the Wakefield county warning area during the overnight hours of Monday October 18th. Irene was the third tropical system of the 1999 hurricane season to affect the Wakefield county warning area, and brought another round of very heavy rain into southeast Virginia.
