An area of thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front moved across the southern Piedmont of North Carolina during the morning, producing gusty winds that caused isolated wind damage. After a lull of a few hours, more numerous storms developed during the heat of the afternoon, producing more widespread severe weather in the form of large hail.
