The weather pattern across south central Arizona was favorable for scattered strong thunderstorms on August 31st; wind fields aloft were stronger than normal and there was ample moisture and instability present. Not surprisingly, scattered to numerous thunderstorms developed during the evening hours across the greater Phoenix metropolitan area and many of them produced gusty and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
