Several large rivers including the Dan and lower Roanoke rivers crested in the first few days of the month in response to the heavy rains that fell the last few days of September into October. The synoptic pattern in place at the end of September carried over into early October, featuring an upper level low over the Tennessee Valley and a strong surface ridge over New England combining to maintain a very moist easterly flow into the region.
