A deep fetch of tropical moisture streaming northeastward across New Mexico ahead of Hurricane Newton combined with strong afternoon heating and instability to produce several strong thunderstorms with heavy rainfall. Showers and storms moved over the same areas repeatedly as linear segments set up across the area.
