On August 28th a tropical depression formed in the Florida Straits, drifting slowly west into the Gulf of Mexico. During the afternoon of August 31st this tropical depression developed into Tropical Storm Hermine over the central Gulf of Mexico and began turning to the northeast. By the late afternoon of September 1st Hermine reached hurricane strength as it approached the coast of the Florida Big Bend region in the northeast Gulf of Mexico.
