Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developed in a moist and unstable air mass ahead of a slow moving cold front during the afternoon and evening. The strongest storms produced marginally severe hail, gusty winds and excessive lightning. Two slow moving, multi-cellular clusters of storms in the western Piedmont resulted in flash flooding when 2 to 3 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.
