Scattered thunderstorms developed across the south-central deserts, including the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, during the afternoon and evening hours on July 9th. Some of the stronger storms produced locally heavy rainfall with peak rain rates in excess of 2 inches per hour. The heavy rains led to a couple of episodes of flash flooding to the south of the Phoenix area during the evening hours.
