A warm front was located across central Minnesota into southwest Wisconsin. Low level flow maintained the influx of moisture and warm air as a shortwave topped a ridge in place to the west. This led to storms throughout much of the day, a few of which were severe with damaging winds and hail. The storms also contained heavy rainfall which primed parts of the area for major flash flooding the following night.
