A cold low pressure system dropped southwestward from the northern Rocky Mountain region through the Great Basin on May 9 and into central California by the morning of May 10 which destabilized the airmass over the area and produced showers and thunderstorms across the area. This low then slowly moved southward through central California during the morning of May 10 which resulted in locally heavy rainfall over Tulare and Kern Counties.
