Lower portions of the Big Muddy River remained above flood stage all month due to backwater from the swollen Mississippi River. At the river gage at Murphysboro, the river crested at 28.07 feet on the 30th. This is just an inch or so above the threshold for moderate flooding. Low-lying woods and fields near the river were flooded, along with sections of a riverfront park.
