A warm frontal boundary across Nebraska worked slowly northward into southeast South Dakota by the evening of May 17 in advance of low pressure which strengthened over the western High Plains. A volatile air mass with around 2500 J/kg of elevated instability was in place, with deep layer shear as much as 50-60 knots.
