Despite a persistent ridge in the upper levels of the atmosphere, scattered thunderstorms developed during the heat of the day. Weak southwest to west winds aloft brought a weak disturbance into the region. With little cap and strong surface-based instability, diurnal thunderstorms became locally very strong.
