Scattered monsoon thunderstorms developed across the central and western portions of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area during the evening hours on September 16th. Some of the stronger storms generated intense rainfall with peak rain rates well in excess of one inch per hour. The heavy rain led to episodes of flash flooding west of Phoenix, especially in areas around the town of Buckeye.
