The Mississippi River returned above flood stage after only a one-month respite from the prolonged flooding that dominated most of the year. After a brief flash drought in September, October ranked as the third wettest October at Cape Girardeau. Heavy rain in the upper Mississippi Valley sent a minor flood crest downstream.
